Why do kitchen sponges have to be so dull ? Well I guess it comes down to cost . I don't know about you but I use one all day everyday. The only ones I can get in America are really boring .
It wouldn't cost much more to do what the Japanese do and make them a bit more fun to have around.

Here's the start of my collection - I researched getting a bread tag one done but am looking at a 10,000 minimum . That'd be a houseful of sponges for years to come.
